PUNK #3 / Joey Ramone Limited Edition Prints Now Available!
Punk Magazine, Inc. is releasing our first official art print that (due to countless requests) features the artwork from one of our original magazine covers. Our first edition features a very popular
image from our voluminous archives: The Joey Ramone cover from PUNK #3 (originally published in March 1976).
Here are some little known facts about this magazine cover:
* Although PUNK #3 didn't sell well on U. S. newsstands, it was very
popular in England. In fact, Rough Trade air-freighted thousand of
copies of PUNK to the UK, jacking up the cover price to 5 pounds ($10
US at the time) to unsuspecting English punk rockers. This eventually
caused a lot of resentment towards the New York scene, since English
punks were getting "ripped off by PUNK magazine." Thing is, PUNK had
nothing to do with it-we gave Rough Trade a deep discount on those
magazines. (Rough Trade used the profits to buy a copy machine, which
was then used to publish English fanzines such as "Rippied and Torn"
and "Sniffin' Glue.")
* As a result of Rough Trade's importation of PUNK #3, this issue of
PUNK helped build a large audience for the Ramones when they played
England for the first time at the famous Roundhouse show on July 4,
1976. (What, you thought this all happened by magic? By accident or
something? No, it's called "advance publicity.")
* This PUNK magazine cover image was recently used to promote "The
Downtown Show: The New York Art Scene 1974-1984" when it visited the
Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA. The image is also featured in
the catalog of that show ("The Downtown Book).
* The original artwork was donated to the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame,
but hasn't been exhibited yet.
* This image has become as iconic and famous as any image associated
with the Ramones and CBGB.
* John Holmstrom, who drew the cover artwork, sat down with Joey
Ramone for a modeling session, since all existing photographs tended
to hide Joey's face.
* Holmstrom was later asked by Johnny Ramone to draw cover artwork
for Rocket to Russia (back cover and inside sleeve) and Road to Ruin
(front cover).
* The artwork for this poster was carefully reproduced from an
original print and reconstructed by John Holmstrom. The art prints
appear in two sizes:
8" X 12": $25
13" X 19": $100
They are printed on matte paper, with archival inks that are
guaranteed for at least 200 years. Each print is numbered and signed
by the artist, in a limited edition of 200.
* This is the first PUNK magazine art print to be offered to the
general public. We hope to provide more soon. Proceeds will go
towards publishing future issues of PUNK magazine. (Hey, it beats
setting up all those "benefit concerts" that never raise much money
anyhow!)
